I'm embarrassed to admit but I was wrong about the physical tuning of the machine. There was a ton of slop in the upper carriage. All the times it crashed into the bed with full extension + one fewer screw in the front of the upper carriage vs the back (to accomodate the limit switch)... rigidity is greatly improved now!

have to modify the gcode from the tt generator, just like cura.

after running the firstlayer test I know:
1. need non-zero Z hop
2. the z-offset is too small (ridges from excess fillament)
